Bantry Technologies made at the Gemplus Developer Conference 2000 a presentation titled: "Migrating from the Classical CEPS Environment Towards the Mobile World".
Presentation summary
The idea of being able to load value onto a payment card and to make payment
transactions with the same card via the GSM infrastructure presents a
number of exciting new possibilities. With the number of mobile phones
skyrocketing across Europe, e-commerce over a mobile, or m-commerce, relying
on the smart card technology for securing the transaction, is promised
to a bright future. The technology being looked at is based on the use
of dual-slot phones. A SIM card is inserted in the traditional slot of
the mobile phone (like most phones today) and the payment card is inserted
in the second slot. Based on the pre-authorization-oriented CEP specifications
to enable interoperability and to ensure a high-level of security, the
idea also lies on the use of Gemplus' technology. This presentation shows
how a migration from the CEP specifications towards the mobile environment
can be done and shows how the technology has been used.

The application Bantry Technologies has developed for the Bull's SIMagine
2000 contest is named “Mobile Casino”. It enables GSM subscribers
to play Black Jack using their GSM handset. The casino gaming application
interacts in a secure manner with an electronic purse application, both
running as separate Java Card applications on the SIM card. The electronic
purse can be un-loaded and re-loaded through an SMS connection to the
OTA server.
The project received the TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile) special award and
has been enthusiastically perceived by a number of major telecom operators
during the GSM World Congress 2000.
Bantry Technologies has now extended this development to lottery games
and is providing a product called MobiGamble. Further extensions, like
the management of a standard CEPS (Common Electronic Purse Specifications)
purse or the migration to a WAP service are also planned.
